Kolkata
is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal. It is located in
eastern India on the east bank of the River Hooghly. The city is a
colonial city developed by the British East India Company and then the
British Empire. The city was the capital of the British Indian empire
till 1911 when the capital was relocated to Delhi. In its 300 years of
existence, Kolkata witnessed fast rise as the second city of the British
Empire in the 1800s accompanied by the development of a culture that was
a coalescence of European philosophy with Indian tradition. The city is
also noted for its revolutionary history, ranging from Indian struggle
for independence to the leftist Naxalite and trade union movements.
Labelled the "Cultural Capital of India", "The City of
Processions", and the "City of Joy", Kolkata has also
been home to luminaries such as Rabindranath Tagore, Subhash Chandra
Bose, Mother Teresa and Satyajit Ray. Problems related to rapid
urbanisation started to plague the city from 1930s and still the city is
an example of an urban hotbed of the developing nations. Place to Interest Botancial Garden The extensive Botanical Gardens, on the west bank of the Hoogly River, stretch forever 1 km along the river and occupy 109 hectares. The gardens were originally founded in 1786 and administered by Colonel Kyd. It was from these gardens that the tea now grown in Assam and Darjeeling was first developed. Trees of the rarest kinds, from Nepal, Brazil, Penang, Java and Sumatra can be found here. Howrah Bridge Howrah Bridge is the third largest bridge in the world, has around 2 million people crossing over it daily. Visible from many places in Calcutta, the bridge is called 'Rabindra Setu' now and links Calcutta with the Howrah Railway Station's sprawling complex and the busy township of Howrah.. Pareshnath Jain Temple This temple, in the north-east of the city, was built in 1867 and dedicated to Sheetal nath ji, the 10th of the 24 Jain Tirthankars. The temple is an ornate mass of mirrors, colored stones and glass mosaics. It overlooks a garden, and is open daily from 6 to 11.30 am and 3 to 7 pm. Victoria Memorial At one end of the Maidan, is Kolkata's most imposing and monumental dream in marble'. It took 15 years to build and was inaugurated in 1921. It is a treasure trowe of Raj relics, offers treelined walks in splendid parks, 'lakes' and houses a number of superb statues including that of Queen Victoria. Calcutta's Metro Rail At present mainly covering all important route in Kolkata,is an extremely efficient and clean system. It has been aclaimed widely as one of the best metro systems in the world. Special services including late night services are run on festive occasions and for other important events. Access by Air Calcutta is well connected to the main Indian cities. It has regular flights to all the major Indian cities. Access by Rail Regular train services connect Calcutta to all the major cities in India.
