![]() The beaches of northern Goa between the Mandovi River in the south & Chapora River in the north are the most popular. The diversity of scenery, landscape and social scene is quit remarkable. The coastline is marked with historical war-torn forts from the Reis Magos royal fort to Goa's northernmost outpost Triacol whose church still serves the few hundred Catholics living in the area. Beautiful beaches - lonely stretches or widely cluttered - are all within easy reach of some of the most important cultural sites. Fort Aguada to the Chapora During the early 17th century, the Portuguese turned this northern Mandovi headland into a powerful fortress, to control the mouth of the River. In 1612, they cut a channel making Aguada into an artificial island. Through the Portuguese conquest & consolidation, it proved impregnable from both sea & land. 79 great guns pointed through its walls commanded the entrance to Mandovi. Sinquerim Beach Sweeping north Fort Aguada in an unbroken stretch of sand terminating in a rocky headland at the end of Baga Beach.
CandolimNot to be confused with Cansaulim in Southern Goa, the first resort settlement north of Aguadais in situated about 400m inland from the shore. The mid - 17th Century Church of our lady of hope seems far too large for the tiny fishing & farming village, candolim. Baga The best beach north of Aguada is crowded with shakes, fishing boats and sun lounge. The beach is clean, offers good live music & the Rive that divides the sand from Anjuna brings fisherman pulling their catch at down & coasting their nets at dusk. Anjuna The hippie - era feel still dominates the air. Anjuna was an important Arab trading post in the 10th & 12th centuries. It's known for its parties especially the once in a month full moon party, drugs & the famous Wednesday flea market. Vagator Beach Red cliffs, coconut trees & crashing waves mark the long sweep of the Vagator Beach. Stunning is the world that gets you! Chapora Chapora fort has the grandest sunset vantages in Goa. The fort commands the hilltop at the north end of the bay, now standing in ruins. It was first built by Adil Shah hence its original name Chapora. The Portuguese built it in present form in1717. Mapusa Mapusa is the main town of Bardez province & the main transport junction for travel to the Vagator. It is also a venue to one of Goa's biggest produce markets held every Friday.
